Glenfinnan Viaduct : The Cherry on Top of My UK Trip (Short Getaway in Scottish Highlands (Part II))

Here we go!  I have posted many pictures of this site on my Instagram account.  Yes, it’s the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, my ultimately favorite place in the UK!  But, before we decided to go to Glenfinnan, another place was in our consideration, which was Eilean Donan Castle.  You know, the castle in James Bond movie.  So, we had to choose, because they’re located in the opposite way and it’s Winter, the sun sets really early.  I called the Castle’s information and it’s being renovated for regular maintenance, no public visitation for couple of weeks.  Then Glenfinnan it is.

I probably won’t be bored telling you how awesome the landscapes in the highlands were.  The place was magical.   I didn’t care if it’s cold, I don’t remember that I was freezing during the trip, all that because the place was just so beautiful.  It’s a true Scottish gem.   Don’t take my words for it, you have to experience it yourself.  Haha.  You might think I’m exaggerating but this is pretty much how I feel about the place and looking back, as I’m writing this, makes me a little excited, but also some kind of pain :(

It took around 1 hour from Urquhart Castle, Inverness to Glenfinnan.  You will pass by some Lochs that you might want to take few stops and snap some shots.  There’s Glenfinnan Monument that allows you to see Loch Shiel from the bird view.  It was closed that day, I’m sure the view must be really amazing from the top.  But it’s alright, since our goal that afternoon was the viaduct.  It’s located not far from the tower.

There’s this small parking lot and we’re lucky we could park the car! Probably because it’s Winter, so not many visitors come (it’d be crowded in the summer).  There’s nobody when we hiked to get to the top to see the viaduct.  The steep incline was slippery and kind of dangerous due to the icey road, but the view when you get to the top was absolutely rewarding.

Glenfinnan Viaduct has been used as location in several films and television series, such as Ring of Bright Water, Charlotte Gray, Monarch of the Glen, Stone of Destiny, and German film Carlie und Louise.  Although it has been featured in many films, the Viaduct actually gained fame due to its association to the Harry Potter movie series.  I’m sure you remember the scene of this railway bridge in that movie.  It’s situated at the head of Loch Shiel which streches south west for 20 miles to Acharacle.

Tada! I’ve never seen that kind of view in my life before, I mean, just look at the pictures!

This is 416 yards long and made up of 21 arches, the tallest of which is 100ft high.- (undiscoveredscotland.co.uk

I'm still obsessed with that fur headband, it's really warm and looks kinda cute :p  Oh and careful on your way down, because it’s really slippery.

I don’t think I need to explain about my outfit as you can see it for yourself.  Yeah, I didn’t pack many clothes that time :p

The Jacobite Steam Train that runs across the bridge only available during April – October.  So, no, I didn’t wait for the train that wouldn’t pass by.  To me, the view that time in Winter was more than enough and I’m really grateful that we decided to go to the Highland that day.  The Scottish Highlands took the cake! The short getaway that day made my entire UK Trip.  Sunny, no rain, cold but not freezing, some snow flakes on the ground, just everything you could ask for a day in Winter.
